La littérature engagée remet en question la définition d'une littérateur atemporelle et détachée des contingences historiques. Tel est aussi le cas de ce due l'on a appelé, en France, après la Seconde Guerre, le | roman noir | ou | polar |, ce roman policier venu des Etats-Unis qui se distingue du roman d'énigme par son écriture béhavioriste, son réalisme et son regard critique sur la société. Dès les années soixante-dix, des auteurs et des autrices réunis sous l'étiquette de |néo-polar| (Manchette, Vautrin, Daeninckx, Pouy ou Fajardie) pratiquent cette littérature policière qui a la tradition d'être politiquement engagée. Or pour comprendre l'engagement de ces écrivain-e-s au passé militant et leur entrée en littérature, il faut se pencher sur la question du genre policier, plus spécifiquement | noir |, et de sa position dans le champ littéraire. Car l'engagement politique dans les romans s'avère indissociable d'un engagement pour le roman noir, genre minorisé au sein du champ, à l'instar d'une fiction policière que l'on persiste à qualifier péjorativement de | paralittérature |. En effet, le genre partage en quelque sorte le même sort que les exclus de la société dont a coutume de parler le polar : littérature en marge, le roman noir écrit sur les marges. Mêlant engagement à l'extrême gauche et rejet de la | littérature blanche |, Jean-Bernard Pouy est une figure bien en vue du milieu du polar en France et se présente comme | un ardent défenseur du roman noir et du roman populaire |. Le père de l'enquêteur libertaire le Poulpe illustre ce double engagement littéraire et politique en endossant une posture d'écrivain | populaire | illégitimé qui se donne à voir dans une pratique d'écriture, une parole et une présentation de soi au public. Cette posture ici analysée lui permet de transformer à son avantage le handicap d'une position dominée dans le champ littéraire.
