Un matin, Pavao Pavlicic reçoit par la poste les prétendues mémoires d'un ancien chauffeur de voitures officielles où se trouvent consignés les conversations, faits et gestes -généralement peu glorieux- de maints dignitaires du régime. Mais pourquoi parle-t-il de ces horreurs et bassesses, pourquoi à Pavlicic et pourquoi maintenant? L'affaire prend une tournure étrange... Fable? Polar? Essai politique? Roman fantastique? C'est tout cela à la fois. La trame du roman est, en apparence, purement policière. Mais l'investigation que mène le personnage principal - l'auteur lui-même sous sa véritable identité - s'apparente aussi à une enquête politique dans les coulisses d'un pouvoir pourrissant. Publié à Zagreb en 1987, ce roman nous éclaire sur l'origine des conflits métastasiques, entreprises de purification ethnique et autres barbaries qui étaient alors à venir.
